03.5 Advocacy for independent participation at CSW

Though rare, there are some groups, who would like to attend CSW, but due to the nature of the organisation, they do not fall within the NGO or government categories.

As mentioned above, one key group who is currently advocating for formal representation at CSW are National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs).

The advocacy position of NHRls is that CSW should formally recognise the important role of independent NHRls in promoting women’s rights and gender equality at the local, national, regional and international level. The Commission agrees to take steps to provide NHRls and their coordinating bodies with independent participation status at the Commission. lndependent participation status of NHRls should be on a comparable basis to the independent participation status of NHRls in the procedures of the UN Human Rights Council and other United Nations human rights mechanisms.
