13.3 Traveling

It is suggested hat you have photocopies of travel documents is always advisable; one left at home with someone and one to carry with you in case of emergencies. Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from time of arrival in the USA and that you have dealt with your USA Visa Waiver (for Australians) in plenty of time. This can be done online at the USA Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) and requires an administration fee.

Many Manhattan-based hotels do not offer an airport ‘pick-up’ service. There are several options to travel from New York JFK airport into Manhattan:

  • SuperShuttle- This is a shared-ride airport shuttle service, providing door-to- door ground transportation. The cost is approximately $US25. Further details are on their website.
  • Taxi/cab- The ride from the airport to your hotel upon arrival is at a fixed rate (currently $US5O) into Manhattan. This can be less expensive if you are able to share with a colleague.
  • Public transport to and from JFK airport to the city costs approximately $US7:00. However, consider the need to negotiate bags from the station to your hotel, which can be difficult and stressful after such a long journey from Australia.

There is also a quick Guide public transportation from the airport to the City website.
