International Women’s Day is observed during CSW each year and CSW proceedings stop for a morning to celebrate. In previous years, International Women’s Day is the day that the UN allows NGOs to come onto the main floor of the Conference Room and take over the space.
The event varies from year to year. Some years there has been drumming and singing, amongst the speeches, other years it is video that punctuates the voices. The Secretary General or his alternate opens the sessions. Apart from being a lot of fun, NGOs have the opportunity to participate in this event purely because they are in New York. The speeches and presentations are informative and inspiring. It is a time to sit back and relax a little and enjoy the morning. At times, NGOCSW also organise an event around International Women’s Day, this may take the form of a march or a presentation.
